A Field Guide to the Natural World of the Twin Cities

ABOUT

A Field Guide to the Natural World of the Twin Cities is a guidebook by John Moriarty, senior manager of wildlife for the Three Rivers Parks District in Minnesota. The 400 page book (available for purchase here) provides descriptions, photography, and maps (!) of the flora and fauna of select parks / natural areas within 50 miles of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Be an urban explorer!

I was contracted to lead the cartography of this publication. I created over 40 maps highlighting each park / natural area using a custom land-cover color scheme plus an overview map for the map inside cover. All maps were created solely in QGIS with no graphic design software! I utilized Python and data-driven map display to control the map scale, symbology, scale bars, and layout. This process was crucial for iteration with the publisher; we could make a small (or large!) change to style, typography, data, or iconography and re-export the suite of maps with the click of a button.
